Thriston Lawrence outlasts Paul Casey in a play-off at the Omega European Masters: A story of charity promise and a costly final bogey

Paul Casey was one par away from a fairytale victory at the Omega European Masters. Standing on the 18th green at Crans-sur-Sierre, the 49-year-old Englishman only needed a par to win his first title since 2026. His wedge from the rough flirted with the creek, the ball stayed dry, but the resulting bogey sent him into a four-hole playoff with Thriston Lawrence. Lawrence birdied the fourth extra hole to claim his sixth DP World Tour title and his third at this event, matching the legendary Seve Ballesteros. The South African had been flawless all day, making eight birdies in a bogey-free 62 to set the clubhouse target at 18 under par. Casey, who started the final round with a three-shot lead, remained in front for most of the day but faltered at the worst moments. He made a double-bogey at the sixth after his approach ran out of bounds, then recovered with birdies, only to drop a bogey at the last when a par would have sealed the win. The backdrop to Casey’s loss was a promise he had made on Saturday. After taking the 54-hole lead, he pledged to donate all his prize money to charities supporting victims of the devastating fire at a bar in Crans-Montana on New Year’s Day 2026. That fire killed 40 people and injured more than 115. Casey earned $412,500 from the $3.75 million purse and confirmed the donation would go to the victims. Lawrence, meanwhile, became a three-time European Masters champion, a feat previously achieved only by Ballesteros. He received the trophy from model and Omega ambassador Cindy Crawford. “This is probably the most emotional moment on a golf course,” said Lawrence. “I fought so hard today. I feel for Paul; he played great golf and it looked like his day all day.” Patrick Reed, the 2026 Masters champion, made four birdies in his opening six holes but was undone by a double-bogey at the seventh. Angel Hidalgo of Spain made five consecutive birdies to briefly threaten the lead. Yet neither could catch the resilient Lawrence, whose birdie in the fourth playoff hole proved decisive. Casey may now turn his attention to the PGA Tour Champions, where he will become eligible after turning 50 in late July 2027. He could also rejoin the DP World Tour as a member for 2027 if LIV Golf’s future remains uncertain. A one-year PGA Tour ban would not prevent him from competing in Europe. Despite the disappointment, Casey’s generosity ensured his week in the Swiss Alps would be remembered for more than the final score.
