When table tennis data is empty: Lessons in honesty for Vietnamese sports journalism

A deep table tennis analysis report arrived on my desk. It called itself Stage-2 Deep Analysis: Table Tennis, with more than two thousand words, divided into nine sections, filled with risk tables and assessment frameworks. But by the final line, I could not find the name of a single athlete, a single tournament, or a single technical statistic worth quoting. Every important box simply read N/A. In a busy sports newsroom, this document could be ignored because it contains no breaking news, no scandal, no obvious headline. Yet I believe it is one of the most valuable documents a young sports journalist can receive, because it teaches a simple but easily forgotten lesson: when information is missing, a writer should be allowed to say so. The report does not hide anything. It openly states that stage-one data was empty, that no technical assessment could be made, and that any attempt to produce conclusions from such emptiness would damage the integrity of the whole product. It chooses silence and marks the risk level as high. Silence is expensive in a noisy age. Every day, social media fills with mass-produced sports stories. In that environment, a report willing to say I do not have enough data to conclude becomes a rare and credible exception. Vietnamese table tennis has long lived with data scarcity. We love the sport, but there is no comprehensive public system for tracking young players, head-to-head records, coaching loads, or tactical efficiency. Reporters who want to write deeply must visit gyms, sit in corridors, and listen to coaches and players. Those stories are precious, but they cannot replace a properly standardized database. Records are not the real story; people are. In table tennis, the moment before a serve looks much like the moment before a sprint start. Legs tense, breathing becomes shallow, eyes search for a point of focus. To see those details, a writer must be present, must wait, and sometimes must accept that the match follows no script. A true sports journalist protects the truth. A false article can damage trust for a long time. Readers may forget a small news brief, but they will not forget a betrayal of confidence. Vietnamese sports journalism needs people who are brave enough to ask hard questions and patient enough to wait for verifiable answers. Someday, when the data system is complete, we will produce real analysis with named athletes, meaningful numbers, and checked stories. Until then, writers should be allowed to say that we are still collecting information. Do not invent data. Do not mistake emotion for fact. Go to the practice hall and watch the athletes sweat. That sweat is never N/A. For me, that is already the most complete story a sports journalist can hope to find.
